A summary of our Indonesian Fisheries Project and what we hope to accomplish.
Wastage
According to The ASEAN Post, Indonesia loses over US$7 billion per year due to seafood wastage. − “Bad distribution networks contribute 15% to this figure, with another 9% lost due to poor processing and packaging processes. Bad fishing practices, such as throwing away unwanted catch at sea, potentially contribute to 8.2% – with another 6% of losses stemming from poor transportation and poor storage systems.”
Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing
IUU fishing has resulted in billions of dollars in lost tax revenue annually as well as harming fragile marine ecosystems.
Mismanagement
A lack of data and little to no coordination between agencies contributes to wastage, overfishing, harm to the environment and loss of revenue.
The World Bank recommends a multi-pronged approach to meeting the challenges of Indonesia’s fishing industry. We plan to exceed these recommendations as follows:
Illegal fishing in Indonesian waters costs approximately US$20 billion in losses a year according to an article published by The Wall Street Journal.
Working in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, our fleet of fishing boats also serve as the extra eyes and ears of the Indonesian Navy.
Our fleet of fishing boats will be in direct communication with the Indonesian Navy to better assist its ability to deploy resources more efficiently in order to better protect Indonesian territorial waters from illegal fishing, piracy and other illicit activities. They can also significantly help the Coast Guard and Navy in search and rescue operations. This mutually beneficial arrangement comes at minimal cost to the Navy, while simultaneously enhancing its ability to defend Indonesian waters.
Every ship in our fleet will be tracked by the Indonesian Navy by satellite from a central command center. This coverage will provide our ships with an added layer of security and protection on the high seas. In conjunction with other technologies we deploy on our ships, real-time tracking will virtually eliminate the possibility of shrinkage arising from piracy/theft.
